Miriam Bajkai

“Art education doesn’t limit me and that’s why I create the way I feel, without rules …”

Miriam, born on April 6, 1967 in Banská Bystrica, tended to art since childhood, but due to family reasons it was not possible to study this field at that time. Her first serious work began at the age of 33, a “hunger” was leading her to it . One year old daughter, absolutely no income, despair. So she picked up a kitchen knife and a piece of wood waste. That was the beginning, a couple of intuitiv carve from woods that was sold immediately and they had money for meal. Since then, she has been creating intensively with breaks. She has no artistic education, her works are intuitive and insitious, which she considers a huge advantage for herself and her work. She hasn’t had an exhibition yet, more or less because of what she says, “that her work will always fly into the world and nothing to exhibit.”

The main focus of her work is woodcarving and in recent years mainly wooden hearts with cottages, where her author’s handwriting is clearly visible. Among other things, she very often create angels, reliefs with various themes, or applied arts, wooden and metal jewellery. Her works are very easy to read for a wide audience and from all of them feel an immense love for home. Another creation is various objects made of an alloy of tin and precious metals, where she has created her own technological process. Recently, she has also been painting on wood, using a combined technique. The wood works come in various formats and sizes, up to two-meter reliefs. Miriam Bajkai’s works are scattered all over the world, where they bring joy. In December 2019, she was invited by the World Wood Culture Society to represent Slovakia as a woodcarver, to China. It was an unforgettable experience and a great honor that opened up new horizons for her.

She has worked a few of her earlier works in a verse book called ČAROVNICA – THE WOOD SHAMAN. The book itself is bilingual, Slovak – English. She wrote a short verse for each of her works, an accompanying word that makes her work even more special.

She currently lives and works in the forgotten village of Polom near Hnúšť, where she has found peace in the bosom of beautiful nature.
