What Is an Exhibition Opening Like, What Should You Bring, and What Should You Wear?

Perhaps you’ve received an invitation to an exhibition opening. If so, you may be considering whether to attend—and wondering about the practical details that come with such an event.

Having answers to these questions can make your decision easier. What can you expect at an opening? How long does it usually last? What should you wear? Is it appropriate to bring something with you?

These are all common questions. While many of you may already know the answers, for others it might be helpful to explore them together with gallerist Viera Žáková.

So, What Exactly Is an Exhibition Opening?

An exhibition opening—known as a vernissage—is a celebration. It marks the official opening of an art exhibition and is often accompanied by a curator’s or gallerist’s speech, as well as an artistic program, most commonly musical. If the exhibiting artist is present, they are usually introduced to the guests and may also address the audience.

What do the curator and the gallerist typically speak about?

The gallerist usually formally opens the exhibition, welcomes the guests, the artist, and the curator, and then hands over the floor. The curator, on the other hand, is the person who, together with the artist, selects the works for the exhibition, taking into account its concept and focus.

For example, if the artist has recently been working on a specific theme or technique, the exhibited works will reflect that. In other cases, the exhibition may present a selection of works from a particular period or introduce a new artist to an audience encountering their work for the first time.

The curator is also responsible for overseeing the installation of the artworks—or executing it directly. This includes deciding where and how each piece is displayed, and in what context it appears alongside others.

During the opening, the curator usually speaks about the artist—their life, their creative approach—and presents the works featured in the exhibition.

In smaller galleries, however, the roles of curator and gallerist are often carried out by the same person.

Ideally, the artist also addresses the audience during the opening, complementing the curator’s words or offering deeper insight into their creative motivations.

Between individual speeches, short musical performances by invited artists are typically included, adding to the overall atmosphere of the event.

How Does an Exhibition Opening Continue, and How Long Does It Last?

It’s important to remember that visitors come primarily to experience the artworks. Once the formal speeches conclude, there is time to explore the exhibition itself.

This part of the evening is usually accompanied by light refreshments. With a glass of wine in hand, guests can take their time viewing the artworks, engaging in conversations with other visitors, or even speaking directly with the artist—who is often happy to share insights about their work with curious viewers.

As for the duration, an exhibition opening typically lasts around one to two hours. Of course, this can vary depending on the size of the gallery and the number of works on display.

Should You Bring Something to an Opening?

The best thing you can bring is an open mind and a positive attitude. It’s important to approach the exhibition without prejudice—whether toward unfamiliar artists, techniques, or themes.

That said, it is not uncommon for some guests to congratulate the artist and bring a small gift, such as flowers or another thoughtful token.

What About the Dress Code?

As I like to say—what matters most is that you come dressed at all.

Today, there are no strict expectations when it comes to formal or informal attire. The atmosphere is what truly matters.

That said, for those who enjoy dressing up, an exhibit
