Meet: Ondřej Svoboda!

I am very pleased that, following yesterday’s visit to a studio—an unusual combination of a blacksmith’s, welding, and metalworking workshop—a potential collaboration is emerging between Atelier Hlavina and a young, successful visual artist from Brno. This description of the space is no coincidence. On the contrary, it perfectly reflects the essence of his work, which exists at the intersection of craftsmanship and fine art.

I am very pleased that, following yesterday’s visit to a studio—an exceptional combination of a blacksmith’s, welding, and metalworking workshop—a potential collaboration is emerging between Atelier Hlavina and a young, successful artist from Brno.

This description of the space is not accidental, but reflects the authentic environment in which works of remarkable playfulness and creative energy are created.

Over the years, Ondřej Svoboda has developed a distinctive artistic language, making his work immediately recognizable in any context. In his figures, animals, plant motifs, and functional objects (such as bowls and vessels), he employs a highly effective visual reduction—precise, expressive, and never forced.

This reduction is never superficial; instead, it captures the essence without literal depiction, carrying within it humor, lightness, and strong craftsmanship.

His primary material is metal, which he shapes through forging, joins by welding, and refines through polishing or matting. He often combines it with wood, yet treats the material in unconventional ways—exposing it to heat and tools typically associated with metalwork. This approach reflects a consistent and original mindset throughout every stage of his creative process.

Ondřej Svoboda was born in Brno, but spent most of his childhood and formative years with his parents, Magda and Jan, and his sisters Lenka and Anna on a family estate in Radňovice. It is there that his father, the painter Jan Svoboda, who also collaborates with Atelier Hlavina, has his studio.

Ondřej studied at the Secondary School of Foundry Engineering in Brno, specializing in artistic blacksmithing—a choice that has proven highly successful. His achievements are reflected not only in the quality of his work, but also in the fact that his pieces are often acquired by collectors almost immediately after they are created.

From a gallery perspective, it is something of a paradox that, despite the artist’s productivity, it is difficult to assemble enough works for a solo exhibition—simply because they leave the studio and travel directly to collectors around the world.

This makes the prospect of presenting his work, at least through the online gallery Atelier Hlavina, all the more exciting.

Ondřej Svoboda currently lives and works in Brno.

Author’s note:

The photographs accompanying this text were taken spontaneously in Ondřej Svoboda’s studio using a mobile phone. I apologize for their technical quality—the artist and his works are even more impressive in person.
