Sumbalová Helena

Like most artists, I have wanted to become a painter since childhood, ideally in combination with poetry. However, life circumstances directed me a little differently.

I received my university degree at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Comenius University in the field of translation-interpreting, but I began to develop my artistic career as a visual artist mainly after my first solo exhibition in 2015. Since then, I have had several solo exhibitions and regularly participated in joint exhibitions at home and abroad. In 2020 I was awarded the Premio Citta di Porto Saint Elpidio in Italy and in 2023 the "Certificate of Artistic Achievement" from Luxembourg Art Prize. Indeed, these are pleasant experiences, every artist is pleased by appreciation of his/her work, however for me the greatest joy is to see sincere interest in my paintings, whether at exhibitions or via Facebook or Instagram. I create not only to express my moods, observations, discoveries or thoughts for myself, but through my work become closer to others, to beautify or make their lives and the environment in which they live special.

The curator of my last exhibition (in May 2024), Dagmar Kudolani Srnenska, wrote the following words about my work, among other things:

"In order for Sumbalova's artistic intention to stand out more, she often uses a combination of warm and cold shades of colors in her paintings. The drawing expression, the play of lines, color tones and velvet transitions of light and shadow alternate in natural compositional rhythm. However, light is very important in her work. With it, she invites us to the unknown and mysterious worlds, sometimes accompanied by angels. The artist's unique style is based on a poetic combination of fantasy, dream and reality, but she develops it not only in her visual works, but also in her poems. It focuses on the poetic, lyrical and harmonious dimension of the human being, sensitively portrays human destinies, listens to the soft and unfamiliar sound of this world. How else could such works as Ocean of Doubt, Touching Lightly, Confusion of the Contemporary World or the Expansion of the Universe be created. In her work, we feel the expression of hidden desires, hopes, the recording of the rhythm of sensory and emotional reconciliations that take place between heaven and earth. And so she symbolically sends them to us, the viewers and admirers of her work."
