Pavol Hammel
Visual artist, musician, composer, producer and lawyer, he was born on 7th of December 1948 in Bratislava, Slovakia. In 1972, he graduated from the Faculty of Law of the UK in Bratislava, but his whole life is devoted to art, especially to music. In 1963, when the legendary music group Prúdy was founded he was there, Slovak popular music would be incomplete without his contribution. Pavol Hammel is primarily known as an outstanding professional singer, musician and composer. However, as many of art lovers know, he is now for several years active in the world of visual arts as well. He is the author of a number of paintings, that are in many cases inspired by the lyrics of his songs. In the past ten years he had a lot of art exhibitions in Slovakia and abroad. From the International Festival of Fine Arts that took place in San Crispine, Italy he brought home “Premio Speciale Della Critica” (the critics creativity and originality prize). Among other places in Slovak Republic, his exhibitions took place in Oravska Gallery in Dolny Kubin, Sariss Gallery in Presov, and Darte Gallery in Bratislava. His collections were available for the art audience to enjoy in Žilina, Poprad, Trenčín, Považska Bystrica and his art is regularly shown on Slovakian art auctions.
“Uniqueness. That’s Hammel’s own handwriting. It didn’t come from many years of painful mining of the essence, or from a rigid drudgery from the basic drawing to the final oil painting. This circumstance, however, should not cause any alarm, because the simplicity in its purest sense is clearly suggesting that the author is not playing any false games. It is probably the absence of prolonged pondering about the concept of his paintings, and the refreshing lightness of his art, which grab and hold our attention. We don’t feel that we need to search for some complex patterns or look for deep, unspoken metaphors. His canvases are right in front of us and we have an opportunity to enjoy them in their obvious existence and embrace the clear message, which they are conveying. Hammel’s oil paintings come to being without painstaking preparation; they come exclusively from the author’s inner impulse in that precise moment, longing to grasp that exact thought or mood.”
Luboš Grossman
The text was created on the occasion of the art exhibition SOMSIJESMESTESÚ in Gallery Crears in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm.
„I found songs embedded into paintings; paintings that provoke joy with movement and sound in one. Strong, impasto texture not only appears like it is created with many layers, but also as if the picture carried more lives, more stories. Same as truly listen to music is an art, it’s an art to perceive for example illusive space, which sits well with Pavol’s creative position. He is not hiding the fact that his inspiration comes from the events unfolding around him in which he finds his own place. This very specific place, just like in his music, matches his temperament that is defined by what is heard and seen. Kamalasky, Vykopavky, Tu som Panom Ja, Opat neskoro or Vyskocena Platnicka, are the names of his paintings, in which we can see the connection that binds what was seen and what was internally experienced. Hammel, conscious of his intentions in art, seeks and discovers new language that, with its essence, composition, and “Hammelian” artistic signature (even though the author says that he has no ambition to be unique) communicates with the audience.”
